Facebook Removed Nearly 9.6 Million Hate Speech Posts During The First Quarter Of This Year / Digital Information World



The social media giant, Facebook has published the company’s biannual Community Standards Enforcement Report. The report displays the number of controversial posts Facebook removed from its platform. Facebook does not allow hate speech on its platform and considers hate speech as a violation of its policies. The company’s policies on hate speech apply to Facebook as well as the Instagram app. The report displays the number of hate speech posts removed by Facebook from Q4 2017 to the first quarter of this year. Facebook took action against over 2 billion pieces of content violating the company’s community standard during Q1 2020.

According to the report, the company has removed a record number of speech posts. The company deleted 9.6 million pieces of hate speech content during the first quarter of this year. In comparison, the company removed 5.7 million hate speech posts in the prior period. The company removed 5.7 posts during the last quarter of 2019, which is 1.6 million more as compared to the number of hate speech posts deleted by Facebook during the first quarter of 2019.

Facebook removed 4.1 million pieces of content in Q1 2020. The company deleted 5.5 million more pieces of content during Q1 2020 as compared to the number of posts removed during Q1 2019. It was seen that organized hate groups were spreading hate speech posts across the platform. The company removed 4.7 million hat speech posts that originated from these organized hate groups during the first quarter of 202. This number shows an increase of over 3 million as compared to the posts removed in the last quarter of 2019.

According to Facebook, the company was able to remove more hate speech posts due to improved technology. Facebook has now upgraded technology for automatically detecting photos and texts. Facebook said in a statement that the company is now able to identify text embedded in photos as well as videos to understand the complete context of a post.



Facebook has also created media matching technology that allows the platform to detect content that is identical or nearly identical to images, audio, video, and text that the company has already deleted from Facebook’s platform. This indicates that Facebook is taking steps to remove hate speech content from its platform. Facebook has improved its automated technology to identify more hate speech posts in order to eliminate hate speech from Facebook’s platform. Facebook expanded its proactive detection technology for hate speech content to more languages. The company also enhances its English detection technology.

According to the Facebook’s Community Standards Enforcement Report, the company was able to remove 88.3% of all hate speech posts before users reported it in during the first quarter of this year.
