A New Feature In Apple Maps Allows Users To Rate Places And Upload Pictures Of Points Of Interest / Digital Information World

Back in June, Apple unveiled iOS 14, and yesterday, the company released the sixth beta of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 that brings a new feature in Apple Maps that allows users to rate places and pictures of their favorite points of interest. Among several new confirmed updates to Maps in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, it seems that Apple is adding in-house ratings and pictures system for points of interest.

Currently, when you click on a placemaker in Apple Maps, you are met with reviews from third-party platforms such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, or Foursquare. If a user taps to read a review, they are redirected to download the partner application from Apple App Store. Furthermore, if you want to submit your own images or reviews, you also need to do that via the third-party application.

As noted by a Twitter user, Beau Giles, some people have noticed a new feature after updating to the sixth beta of iPadOS 14 and iOS 14. He wrote in a tweet that he was just looking at a random venue in Maps, and he noticed a new ‘Rate and Add Photos’ option towards the bottom.

Clicking on the Rate and Add Photos button produces a menu with options to rate a specific place with a thumbs up or thumbs down. Apple will only accept ratings from users who have physically visited the place to prevent abuse. The Apple Maps app detects when a user has visited a place several times using built-in machine learning. Then, the app will present those users the option of rating that place. It seems that the new feature is not universally available everywhere. Some users in the United States have this option and other users reported seeing the option in Australia for venues in big cities such as Adelaide and Perth.

With the new change, it seems that, just like Google, Apple is planning to crowd-source the data from its own users to improve its service and remove dependencies on third-party platforms such as Foursquare and Yelp as sources of reviews and user images of bars, parks, shops, and other points of interest. Maps will only present the new option to users who are older than 13 years, and images will be reviewed by humans before appearing on the Apple Maps app.
