With data from more than 8 million apps and thousands of websites, App Annie gives a complete picture of mobile app usage for marketers to understand the trends, consumer behavior and shifts, and ways to acquire and retain customers while entering new markets. Recently, App Annie issued a report which suggests that overall, so far in 2020, around 1.6 trillion hours have been spent on mobile!

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and general lockdown, work from home implementations, mobile app usage has increased tremendously. Now, that is not so surprising because it was inevitable. The surprising takeaway from this report is that this change in consumer behavior may have become permanent.

According to Lexi Sydow, the senior Market Insights Manager at App Annie, the revenue growth from mobile usage that we see now would have taken around 2 – 3 years if things had remained normal as before the COVID-19 hit the world.

Now mobile is the key to success for any business, and as we all head forward in 2020 and towards 2021, it seems that the businesses which will be using and prioritizing mobiles will completely outpace the competitors who do not invest in mobile businesses.

Furthermore, it seems that mobile app usage has deeply integrated into our lives. It has been noticed for most users, the first screen that they see as soon as they wake up is their mobile screen. In April, as per the report, the average user spent around 4 – 6 hours which is almost a third of their waking time on their mobiles!

Then, the average spent on mobile apps has increased by 25% than before. Consumers have spent $50 billion by the Q2 of 2020.

App downloads from Google Play Store and Apple App Store reached 64 billion by the Q2 this year. It is 10% more in comparison with 2019.

The apps for video-conferencing especially saw major growth. Some of the top-ranking apps include ZOOM Cloud Meeting, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex Meetings, and Google Meet.

Apart from this, eCommerce also saw quite a lot of growth during the pandemic. This led to people spending more time on shopping apps also as compared to 2019.

Since people are now spending more time on their mobiles, the mobile ad placement was ought to increase too. It showed a leap by 70% in the first six months of 2020.
