With charities relying on generous donations from both companies and individuals, it’s no wonder that the missions of some of the biggest companies and CEOs in the world is to donate to charity.

Latona’s has analysed the most generous companies and individuals to reveal just how much they’ve pledged in a year, as well as how much of the donation has affected their net worth. You can find the full data and information here.

The most charitable companies

From the companies Latona’s analysed, Gilead Sciences donated the most money in the US. Gilead Sciences donated $388 million, a total of 2.9% of their pre-tax profit. Goldman Sachs Group donated 2.5% of their pre-tax profits, a total of $280 million, and Pfizer pledged 1.7% and $210 million.

Financial giant, Bank of America has pledged a whopping $181 million of their earnings to various charities, but this is only 0.6% of their pre-tax profit!

So, which industries are we seeing giving the most to charity and which need to step up in their pledges?

From the research, Latona’s have analysed the sectors from its original data pull to see which are the most generous.

Finance comes top with a total of 4 companies from the analyses being in the finance sector. Health and technology comes second, with 2 from each sector and Petroleum and Science are last with 1 from each.

Combined, these companies have donated $216,100,000 to different charities.

Who has donated to the BLM (Black Lives Matter) Movement

Whether a company’s mission is to donate to charity or not, sometimes action in the form of donations is needed to take a stand against a worldwide issue or cause.

The BLM Movement is a cause that perhaps was not in companies missions, but to donate to the movement funded vital support for those affected after a worldwide outcry for change.

Gatsby, TikTok and Help Scout were the top three companies that donated to the Black Lives Matter Movement in the US. Gatsby pledged $120,000, 104.17% of their 2019 gross profits, TikTok pledged $176.9 million, 2.26% of their 2019 gross profits and Help Scout donated $14.4 million and 2.08% of their gross profits. The most charitable individuals

According to the Forbes 400 list, these are the most charitable individuals by donating the highest share of their own wealth. The table below shows just how much the most generous individuals are.

However, some individuals go one step further than donating every so often and pledge to give away more than half of their fortune either in their lifetime, or when they die. The Giving Pledge was started by Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010, and its aim is for billionaires to give away half of their fortune to causes such as poverty alleviation, disaster relief, education, women and girls’ empowerment and medical research (1).

Coming closely behind is John & Laura Arnold with 6.2% of their combined wealth being donated to charity, $3,300,000,000 to be exact.

Other notable people who have pledged a lot of money include Bill and Melinda Gates with a whopping $97,000,000,000 however this is only a mere 0.1% of their worth. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have also donated a large sum of money over the years, totalling $61,000,000,000, 0.4% of their combined worth.
